Moving to Montreal area, looking for some information/help.

Messages recommandés

Salut,

I would attempt to type in french, but my french is so horrible no one would understand me, my apologies.

My name is John and I am moving from out of province to Montreal for work. I have been involved with racing for many years at many levels (Nationwide, Hooters Pro Cup, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, ACT, OSS, 600 Racing Legends, etc.) as a crew member and am interested in building or purchasing a car to drive in Quebec.

I could use some help from someone that is good in english and unbiased towards any series (and near Montreal) to help me navigate my way through Quebec racing.

I will be in the Montreal area from the 4th to the 11th of April to try to find a home. (please read a garage, with a bathroom, bedroom, and eating devices) :)

If you have time to sit down, have a coffee, go through some rules, how series are run and their competition levels, and where the best places to live (aka work on racecars) are, please send me a message.

I will also be looking for some other new things when I move....
24ft ish enclosed trailer
2wd V8 truck to pull said trailer
a house to buy, with garage / somewhere to work on racecar(s)
where to find parts/used racecars (for sale locally, not just the classifieds here or racingjunk.com)

Thank you for your time,

(please respond to this post in french, I attempt to read it, and then use the translator to see if I'm close. IF I still don't understand, I will ask) Merci.

Oval

I'm currently looking at the ACT, QSS, and St. Eustache Sportsman.

my pro's for ACT
- cars are plentiful
- familiar w/ rules
- can run at a large number of tracks
- can run as a regular LM at most tracks in Ontario

my con's for ACT
- possibility of high travel cost
- closest track (that I know of) St. Eustache does not run them weekly

QSS, copy and past most of ACT pro's and con's, except it would be classed as a LLM under the Ontario Speedway Associations' rules.

St. Eustache Sportsman pro's
- local
- metric chassis
- slight rule differences compared to an advanced street stock in OSA region
- 75 laps per feature (more seat time)
- tire rule

con's
- there isn't a huge market for those style cars outside of Montreal (that I know of)
- pricey compared to some other series
- the high likelihood of being illegal at most tracks for other series (to gain seat time)

Thunder Cars/ Street Stock/ Production is a high probability, depending on quality of cars and similarities between rule books of competing tracks.

I'll be working in St. Hubert as a fabricator, so chances are I will be settling on the South Shore, unless I can find a garage/space to rent within the area.

Thanks for you help guys.

Go read the rules at http://www.anca-qc.com/ for Sport Compact yuo can Run many track there is 3 track plus on payvement oval and one dirt track with 98% same rules but would take 10 minutes to swap the diferent parts.

Sport compact is a cheaper class to run and its a fast running class.
Stef68 has a Hyundai 2001 readdy to race with a few spare parts that would be the best deal
if you need a few links and help on reading the post I will help you with a smile.

Has for the Sportsman there is a few turn key cars for sale look in the for sale section [ A vendre]
you can pick one of the sports man for 20k to 25K that will run in top 10 or better. if you want to talk
send me a PM with your phone number and I will call you I talk alot better then I write.

Les Sportsman à St-Eustache ont des cousins pas trop différents aux États-Unis, les Tigers Sportsman :

http://www.acttour.com/rules/Tiger%20Sportsman%20112410.pdf

Sinon les ACT-LMS roulent aussi au Vermont :

http://www.acttour.com/rules/ACT%20Late%20Model%20010611.pdf

Thank you everyone for your interest and information. I'm sure I'll be talking to some of you this week while I'm down to learn a little more.

I'm leaning more towards purpose built racecars than production based, therefore, even though 4 cylinder classes normally have great racing, I'll be more likely going for one of the other series mentioned earlier. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Also thanks for mentioning the American track's rules, I followed your post through Isabelle Tremblay's thread and found it very useful. Looks like a couple of hours in the shop and you could have the car switched over very quickly.

Any other input would be very helpful.

Merci,

Johnathan Schwemler

Thanks for all the help guys. By now I've talked to the majority of people that have left numbers on this thread, either face to face or by phone.

My employer has made it so that I can be in Montreal for the start of the season.

Lynne Leclerc put a lot of effort into finding me a nice house with a good garage in Saint-Jacques--le-Minuer. I couldn't have bought the house without the help of JF Descarries who took time out of his days to advise and represent me in the final stages of the purchase. I move in the 17 of June.

Over easter weekend I took work off early and reached out to some NASCAR CTS friends and have my new suit, helmet etc. Some of which will show up later. Small sponsorships from friends go a long way.

I've had some long talks with successful racing friends and am curious of a couple of things.

A. Are there anymore ESA sportsmans for sale?
B. Are there any metric ESA productions for sale?
C. Is there anyone that may be interested in doing a rental program for a ESA sportsman? Maybe a backup car?

I'm having a great time so far and looking forward to meeting more of you. Everyone I have met so far has been more than generous and helpful, and I really appreciate it. Also thanks for helping me with my apparent language handicap, and I'm sorry that I didn't grow up in an area where french was taught. I'm sure I'll learn eventually.

Thanks

Johnathan Schwemler

Thanks, I have looked at some sportsman, and appreciate the links. I had thought the 55 had sold.

Unfortunately the camaro isn't a metric frame, which is important for me.

Maybe there might be something that isn't posted on the forum that someone might know about.

Thanks again,

Johnathan Schwemler

It's been brought to my attention that I'm missing out by not accepting the legitimacy of a camaro. Because of the nature of my employment, I will be moving away from montreal again, and need a car that can go with me. Unfortunately mustangs and camaros are illegal at the majority of canadian tracks.

Racing is an espensive sport, and I'm planning ahead to maximize my budget.

I purchased a sportsman late last night with the help and guidance of a good friend. With some luck and a possible sponsorship deal, the car should be out on the track for mid July. I'll have more information later (and pics) as things progress.

Thanks for everyone's help and advice.

Hey guys, looking for some more help in finding information.

I've been depending on my blackberry and I'm having a hard time relocating the purses for St Eustache's Sportsmans.

What is the purse per night? How about the points fund?

What points system do they use?

Are the starting positions determined by pts or drawn for?

Are the track contingency sponsors associated with a funded program?

Thanks again guys for your help.

Here's a couple pictures of the car, in the condition I picked it up as. We trailered it home to my house in Petawawa to store it for a couple of weeks while I wait for my new house.

Thanks for the welcome Paul

I'd like to thank everyone who has helped me so far, Mr JF Descarries for all his advice and finding a good car for a great price, Lynne Leclerc for driving across Montreal to the south shore for a whole week to find me a house with a big enough garage. Isa Tremblay for recommending Lynne. Tammy and Serge at Morin Performance as well as Allen and Yves at the track for all the clarification on rules (google translate does not translate the rule books very well). Jamie Hackonson at Fast Eddie Raceware may never see this, but she took the time to personaly help me decide on my gear and made sure that I wasn't needlessly overspending.

If it weren't for all these people I could have easily made decisions that would not allow me to obtain my future goals. JF especially has allowed me to find what I needed to accomplish the required tasks.

I'm looking forward to racing in the St Eustache Sportsman Series, to learning and developing both chassis development and race craft skills, and spending hours in the shop with my beloved welder.

I may not end up staying in Montreal as long as everyone else, but already I feel like I've made some lifelong friends.

There are still a ton of things that I will need before going out on the track, and I'm sure even more people that I will meet before then, and I'm looking forward to it. Keep posting your used equipment in the classifieds, it's the first place I look!

Merci beaucoup!

Johnathan Schwemler.

Unfortunately, no. I was busy picking up the trailer and didn't get a chance. I'll be able to buy the tires later, but for right now inspecting and repairing the car is more important. I should mention I still haven't moved to my new house yet, or completed all the other stuff changing provinces entails.

Thanks Yves, I'll call with questions when things slow down at work.

From all the photos it looks like everyone else had fun this weekend! I really wanted to come and watch, but drove home (4 hrs to the garage in Petawawa) to get some wrench time in with the car.

Congratulations to the 66 for his first win of the season.

I`ve been making some phone calls and arranging to call in some favours. Right now I have some talented mechanics and suspension guys arranged to do a thrash on the car during the first week of June. Obviously there has been a call out to the Sportsman drivers *cough cough* to get their cars out to the track. Depending on what happens in the next couple of weeks I may show up a little early. Actually.... considering that my plan was to run next year, and use this year as a research season, I may be 3/4 of a season early! ;)

I`ll post pictures of the *naked* sportsman after I get home from work.

If anyone has equipment sitting around that they`re looking to sell, or even lend out at an agreed arrangement it would help me get on the track sooner.

Things I don`t have yet....
radios
a decent body to take pictures for the sponsor with (I have a Fusion, but brand doesn`t matter in this case)
a paint scheme
a number....
scales
levelling pads for the scales

Once the car gets alot closer to seeing the track, I`d like to rent it and shakedown the car. If it`s possible (Ontario insurance is different than Quebec) I`d like to run with another Sportsman so that I`m comfortable with St. Eustache`s unique layout.

Hope to see you guys soon... keep the shiny side down, and hopefully *fingers crossed* some more cars start coming out!

Johnathan Schwemler

Why don't you take 80 as your number...

You have a '80 Malibu and a '80 Le Mans!!!

For a paint scheme, give me your email, I'll send you some that I've done for my Sport Compacte... Maybe you'll like one of them!
