''NEW! Frame Design Pre-Check

WARRENDALE, Pa., April 8, 2014

We’re adding a new element to Technical Inspection that allows you to help ensure that your frame is fully-compliant with the BajaSAE frame rules before even showing up at competition!

Introducing: Frame Design Pre-Check

Participation in “Frame Design Pre-Check” voluntary and completely optional. If you choose to participate, you will need create/fill out and send us the following, before competition:

1. Roll Cage Specification Sheet & frame material documentation (invoices, certifications, calculations, etc.)

2. Engineering Drawings of your frame from several specific views

You can submit these documents on BajaSAE.net in the same place where you submit the Design and Cost reports. Both blank form templates and a filled-out example will be available on the BajaSAE.net Downloads section as well to get you started.

The National Tech Inspector frame specialists will review your frame design and materials documents in the few weeks prior to competition and do one of the following:

· Accept your submission and frame design. If your submission / design is accepted, then it means that the frame specialists agree that your design and documentation check out and should result in a compliant frame once constructed properly. If your submission / design is accepted, then when you are called for Tech Inspection you should expect a smooth and slightly quicker trip through the frame check section. *NOTE: Final approval of the frame cannot be given until the car is reviewed at competition during Technical Inspection. Although acceptance of your team’s submissions for the Frame Design Pre-Check can help identify most design problems, it does NOT guarantee that your frame will pass the physical technical inspections.*

· Reject your submission and frame design. If your submission / design is rejected, that simply means that it’s not fully-acceptable yet. If rejected, the frame tech will provide feedback about why. He/she might ask questions that you need to answer, places you need to provide more information, or point out concerns with your design that are likely to prevent it from passing. You can resubmit the package with more information numerous times up until the cut-off date. If your final submission is not accepted, no big deal. You simply have to go through the normal Frame Tech process at competition that you would have had to do anyway had you not attempted Express Frame Pre-Check. There’s nothing to lose!

If you would like to participate, download the form templates and start putting the information together. When you have the submissions ready, upload them to the appropriate slots on your My Team Document Submissions page. Here are the details about what you will need to submit:

Frame Documentation Package
This package consists of all of the following, combined into a single PDF file. The maximum size of the file is 10 MB.

– Roll Cage Specification Sheet

– Frame Material Documentation

– Invoice of roll cage material

– Material Test of Certification

– Any Required Calculation per rule B8.3.12

Frame Drawing Package
This package consists of engineering drawings (CAD renderings, etc.) of your frame in the following standard views:

1. Front

2. Side

3. Top

4. Isometric

These can be a single page or multiple pages but must be combined into a single PDF file. The maximum size of the file is 10 MB.

The drawings should note the following items:

• Callouts indicating the material that is used in the frame

• The major dimensions and angles required to meet the frame rules in B8.3

– This includes the driver’s seat bottom so that the SIM height, the RRH width, and the RHO LC (point C) can clearly be defined.

This is a new development and we’re evaluating its usefulness as well as the process itself. We also welcome your feedback as we continue to work to make the BajaSAE competition experience even better.
