Car manufacturers made us dream all along the years, without any possibility to contemplate their models in our showcase, as we were thinking most of their models would not be produced at 1:18 scale, and more less at 1:12 scale, for economic considerations. OTTOMOBILE FANS investigates about the manufacturing of an OTTOMOBILE

But today, favor to OTTO-Models and the new brand GT Spirit, we can admire all this models in our showcases, exactly reproduced.  Today is Christmas’s day, OTTOMOBILE has invited us for a discussion…

OTTOMOBILEFANS: Coud you summarize in few phrases how you develop an OTTOMOBILE?
OTTOMOBILE: It is very difficult to summarize it in few phrases; it takes us 14 months to develop an OTTOMOBILE. All along these months, many things happen.
First step is to establish the technical requirements of the car we have chosen (dimensions, colors, specific facts or figures…) and then find a real vehicle to scan it in 3D.
Second step is to design the miniature using CAD design based on the 3D scan realized. We also define the future assembly sequences.
Next step is to produce a prototype based on our CAD model. Once this prototype fit with all the requirements, we launch industrial tools to have a mass production for this miniature.
After many months of work, we prepare the prototype for pre-production, and once everything has been approved by the Car Manufacturer, we launch the mass production.
After all has been produced, it is shipped by boat to Le Havre and then delivered to our logistic base in Rennes.

OTTOMOBILEFANS: How long does it take to produce all the models for 1 miniature (from the first to the last)?
OTTOMOBILE: It takes 2, 5 or 3 months to produce all the models for 1 miniature. It depends on the complexity of the different elements of the miniature, not on the number of models we have to produce.

OTTOMOBILEFANS: How do you realize the molds? Is the process the same as the one you used in 2009?
OTTOMOBILE: The creation of a silicone mold is simple. We cast our mold on production master and then we sink parts in silicone molds.

OTTOMOBILEFANS: How many miniatures can you realize with 1 mold? Do the molds have a limited life?
OTTOMOBILE:  For 1 silicone mold, we can produce 25 to 50 models; it means that we need 80 molds for a 3 000 models production.

OTTOMOBILEFANS: Can you explain us how you clean the shells and how long does it take to dry them?
OTTOMOBILE: We must polish the bodies after casting; each body is manually resumed with very fine sandpaper under water. Then the bodies dry during few days before painting.

OTTOMOBILEFANS: Do you paint the bodies body by body? Do you use a spray gun?
OTTOMOBILE: Yes, the bodies are painted one by one, manually, using the spray gun. There are 4 coats of paint:
1 white primed to see imperfections and hang the painting
2 coats of paint
1 varnish layer
Our paintings come from automotive industry, and have a better quality than the paintings for real cars. We use manual painting whereas automotive industries use robots. That's the reason why we have strained colors (no orange peel) and deep.

OTTOMODELSFANS: Are the manufacturing and paintings sequences all the same, even if the dimensions of the parts are different for 1 model?
OTTOMOBILE: No, considering the dimensions of the parts, their type of painting (metal, pearl or solid), and the material to paint, we can use different procedures, but this is our manufacturing secret.

OTTOMOBILEFANS: Once the painting is dried, which process do you use for varnishing? One or several coats?
OTTOMOBILE:  There is one coat of varnish, but it can happen that we need to operate many times. Some models could be received 5 coats if any issue is faced.

OTTOMOBILEDELSFANS: Some parts are manually painted, how many people are involved in this operation?
OTTOMOBILE: It is hard to say, it depends on the model complexity.  On average, for one model, there are around 20 people for the models decoration activities.

OTTOMOBILEFANS: During assembly sequences, how many parts are included for 1 model?
OTTOMOBILE: Depending on the model, we can have 60 to 120 parts. For example, chromes request more parts than usual.

OTTOMOBILEFANS: Are the polystyrene packaging manufactured in your factory?
OTTOMOBILE: Yes we produced the packaging in our factory.  Most of our collectors hate us for our packaging that put crumbs everywhere. We are satisfied with it, as it is necessary to deliver the packages in a good state. This is a flexible material, but unfortunately tends to crumble.

OTTOMOBILEFANS: How long does it take between the end of models packaging, and the departure of shipping boat (storage, transportation and loading)?
OTTOMOBILE: Packaging operation is done quickly, generally one day, at least two.

OTTOMOBILEFANS: Would you give the opportunity to interview you about the 3D scan operation?
OTTOMOBILE:  Of course, it would be a pleasure to discuss about this procedure.

OTTOMOBILEFANS:  To conclude this interview, and as Christmas is coming soon, would you have any scoops to share with us about future OTTOMOBILE models?
OTTOMOBILE:  So, to give fun to Golf fans, we plan to produce a Golf MKI GTI, size 1/12, but I let you guess the color…  We can also announce 2 new brands for the coming months for OTTO: Opel and Mercedes
